STEPS TO
CONNECT OR DISCONNECT UTILITIES
Each Real Estate transaction is different, but
typically 10 days to two weeks before you
close escrow on your new
home, it's wise to set up utilities to be
transferred into your name. Set these up to begin on
the close of escrow date agreed to in your
Purchase Contract. It's
also not a bad idea to contact each utility a couple
days before close of escrow to make sure everything
is in order. I've seen instances where a utility
company neglects to properly take care
of the transfer! Sometimes the utility company
refuses to set up the transfer until they have heard
from the Seller of the home you are buying. If that
happens, contact your
Buyers Agent, and he/she will contact the
Listing Agent to get the Seller in gear.
Moving day can be extra
stressful when you don't have a phone, water, or
electricity, so please don't let this important step
slip by!
You have two options for setting up your utilities.
Ask your Buyers Agent for the phone numbers for each
utility company servicing the home you are buying.
Then call each one and explain that you are
purchasing a home, and want to make arrangements for
transferring the utility into your name for a
particular date (COE Date).
OPTION ONE
Calling to make the arrangements personally:
What to expect when you call: They will typically
ask for the address of the subject home. They will
need some of your personal information to set up an
account. Some may require a deposit, some may not.
Have a pencil and paper handy because they will
likely give you an account number for reference.
OPTION TWO
Set up utilities online:
This is a fairly new service, and is actually pretty
